Ruins of the Livonian Order Castle

Object description
Built in the 13th century, probably, on a place where once a Latgallian castle stood. There are no information about the initial looks of the fortification. Since the 13th century Valmiera has been devastated for several times. In 1702 both the city and the castle burnt down, therefore, only castle ruins have remained until nowadays.
Today, visitors can also explore the Valmiera Museum and its exhibition hall in the castle ruins area, as well as the “de Woldemer” exhibition, which takes visitors on a journey into the story of ancient Valmiera. Here, the city’s and castle’s earliest history meets the worldview of Valmiera’s people of times gone by, the power of Hanseatic merchants, and the skills of local craftsmen.
